The literary life and the libraries in Elbląg between 1918 and 1945

The article presents the literary life in Elbląg between 1918 and 1945 and some of the activities of the individual libraries in the city. It names well known writers who created in Elbląg and those who were born there, as well as writers whose work related to the city, discussing their lives and work. The article also talks about selected literary events held in Elbląg.

In its part dealing with the municipal libraries the article presents their book collections and discusses their role in promoting reading among the citizens as well as in affecting the cultural life in the city. In addition, some statistical data with information on book loans are presented showing trends in literary tastes and preferences of the citizens.
